Today marks one year of @girleatworld (more on this below! ⬇️). This is a strawberry ice cream ? at Karlskirche, an 18th century baroque church located on the south side of the Vienna, Austria. Vienna is such a fascinating city, full of arts and music but the most interesting thing has got to be that their water comes straight from the alps (like evian from tap!). Vienna is also where i learned that the architecture style i like is called "baroque". Exactly a year ago on July 31, 2013 I took off on my first solo backpacking trip from Singapore to Europe, where I took my first girleatworld picture. I visited Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Netherlands and Belgium. I didn't actually call it "@girleatworld" until this past May, but basically i've been doing this for a year! ?? #vienna #austria #karlskirche #icecream #cones

Happy Monday! Missing this Hello Kitty donut at the organized chaos of the shibuya crossing in Tokyo ???. The Shibuya "scramble" crossing is well known for people watching and a must visit while in Tokyo. When the traffic lights turn red, pedestrians would pour out from all sides and meet in the middle of the intersection. I find it very calming to watch from afar. Also, Hachiko statue is in one of the corners of this intersection! — I've been spending some time re-learning Japanese through iknow.jp and I love it so much! To my fellow 日本語 learners, i highly recommend checking out iknow.jp @iknowjp to review your kanji, listening skills and vocabularies. It makes the learning process super fun compared to using flash cards! However, this app will not teach Japanese from scratch – you have to use this in conjunction of a text book since they do not teach you grammar. I wish apps like this existed when I was learning Japanese in college! You can also learn other language like Chinese and English for SAT learners #iKnowjp

Happy mid-autumn festival! ??? This is an important holiday celebrated in many east asian culture, namely Chinese (Moon festival), Vietnamese (Children's day), Japanese (Tsukimi – literal translation of "Moon Viewing") and Korean (Chuseok / Hangawi). Though the name differs across countries and cultures, it seems to be originated from friends and family gathering for celebration of full harvest moon – hence the mooncake! In chinese tradition, the mooncake is a delicacy offered at celebration of mid-autumn. These days the mooncake is offered even for business clients which has resulted in fancy mooncakes made by high-end hotel brands. In Singapore, a good mooncake can cost anywhere between $52-$68 for a box of 8! You also have to be careful when eating these since they are deceptively high in calories due to the rich filling (normally red bean, lotus or salted egg yolk) There are many variations of legends associated with this festival but my favorite has got to be the one with a selfless rabbit sacrificing itself for others. The story goes: Once upon a time, three deities from the Moon? transformed themselves into poor old men???? and went begging for food on earth from a monkey?, a fox? and a rabbit?. The monkey and fox gave them food, but the rabbit was poor and did not have anything to give. So instead, the rabbit decided to throw itself into a fire? so that the old men can have food. The deities were so touched by the rabbit's selfless act that they let the rabbit live in the Moon Palace with them. Might sound like a crazy story, but apparently "Rabbit that lives in the moon" is observed in many east asian and aztec culture, resulting in variations of folklores that tells of a rabbit and the moon. This is believed to have originated from markings on the moon that resembles a rabbit, which can be seen during the full moon. You can search for "Moon Rabbit" if you are interested! ???????????

??? Too cute to eat!!! When i saw this Hello Kitty dim sum featured by @danielfooddiary, my first reaction was "I MUST HAVE IT NOW ?". So, off I went to the Hello Kitty restaurant which offers tons of Kitty-themed dishes! Traditionally, this is Liu Sha Bao aka Salted Egg Yolk custard bun – which is a popular part of dim sum and best known for the liquid salted egg yolk filling which is sweet and full of flavors. Many people complained about the food quality here, but I think they have improved since the first opening a few months ago. You shouldn't go here expecting for the best dimsum (especially in Hong Kong), but if you are a Hello Kitty fan you MUST go! #toocutetoeat The Dapper collection by @danielwellingtonwatches launches today! It's men's watch but I love the deep blue hands. Use "dwGirleatsworld" for a further 20% discount at their website! Code has been extended to 30th October ??

#latergram Donkey Burger (Lu Rou Huo Shao 驴肉火烧) at Wangfujing Snack Street in Beijing ?? It's basically donkey meat served in sesame bun. Another case of blind ordering and pointing around at whatever looks interesting. I had no idea it was donkey meat until i showed a picture to a chinese friend – it tasted like beef! ??? In Wangfujing street, there were tons of odd eats – skewers of scorpions, starfish and grubs. I couldn't bring myself to try any of it though, especially when the scorpions were still wriggling around on the skewer ?

Everything is golden here. Last stop in Myanmar, the great Shwedagon in Yangon. There isn't much to do in the capital city, but this pagoda is a must-visit. It's considered the most sacred pagoda in Myanmar and is believed to contain relics of the previous Buddhas. To me the sheer size of the pagoda itself is already amazing, but according to legend Shwedagon was built over 2,600 years ago. Much of burmese history, including the recent ones, took place here. I had more of those small clementines here, because that's literally what I had the entire time here! Locals by them by the bags and they seem to be sold everywhere ??

#latergram More weird meats I ate during this past trip! This is a kangaroo canapé while overlooking Uluru during sunset at the Sounds of Silence dinner that @yhaaustralia sent me to. I'm going to remember this dinner experience for many years to come. How does Kangaroo taste like? Beef! A very lean beef. The animal is so synonymous with Australia that most people probably think Australians ride kangaroos to work, but it's actually not very common to see a wild one in bigger cities like Sydney or Melbourne. I saw a ton of them in the Northern Territories though, especially while camping at Kakadu and Litchfield! One of of our camping grounds were at a farm in Mt Bundy. At night when the light has turned off, we'd hear a single rapid crunching sound on the grass. I was creeped out until we saw one hopping across the entrance of our tent and we realized it was just wild kangaroos hopping about our tent! It is also not very common for Kangaroo meat to be consumed in bigger cities… until recently that is. I was told by my local friends that kangaroo meat has started making its way to grocery stores. Kangaroos are breeding machine – they start at roughly 2 years of age with each pregnancy lasting about 18 months, though kangaroos have the ability to "freeze" embryo development until her pouch is ready / unoccupied by previous Joey (a Kangaroo baby). They breed so fast that a Kangaroo mommy would constantly have one in her belly, one Joey in her pouch and another young one running about. Overpopulation in Kangaroos causes overgrazing and problems with farmers, thus consuming Kangaroos might actually be beneficial. Plus they are cheaper than beef. Last Kangaroo fact: a group of Kangaroos is called a "mob". ???? #SeeAustralia #RestaurantAustralia #NTAustralia #RedCentreNT #ExploreUluru #Kangaroo #GirlEatAustralia

Just in time for Myanmar trip next week – This #WeEatWorld by my friend @nycars shows the magical view that puts Bagan on my "must visit" list. Follow @nycars for awesome – and punny – cars! As for the caption, i'll keep it true to @nycars' words: "It's taken while travelling in a hot air balloon over Bagan, which is located in central Myanmar along the Ayeyarwady River. I would love to see a hot air balloon chase in a movie one day, it would take around 5 hours. But there's certainly something very peaceful about drifting with no sound as the sun rises over this incredible place. The large structure is the Sulamani Temple, built in 11th century and one of around 3000 temples in the area. The puff was Myanmar street food, and was filled with peanut and sugar and was quite disgusting. My tip, avoid eating dubious street food before getting on a hot air balloon. Please enjoy, and please go visit Bagan. It's incredible." (I'll still try the street food tho :P)
